What is Freeganism?Freeganism – a combination of the words “free” and “vegan” – is an anti-consumerism, anti-capitalist, counter-cultural movement and lifestyle that focuses on minimizing waste of resources and using only what is needed. It has developed in recent years in reaction to society’s consumerism and wasting of resources- buying new things, and throwing out the old. Participants of Freeganism, called freegans, aim to find alternative, non-consumerism ways to meet everyday needs. This includes using and eating food that has been thrown out but is still good to eat, wearing clothing that is not bought from stores, squatting in abandoned houses that do not have to be paid for to live in, and many other non-wasteful methods of living.

Freegans forgo shopping in stores and rely on alternative sources for their needs.
